Brenda Gonzalez
I have always considered my self to be a leader. I know to be a leader is more than being in charge. It is about responsibility, and the ability to take hold of a situation and come through on top. My leadership ability made a difference in my family.

I am a hardworking, intelligent team player who loves working with people. Because of my sociable ways, I find personal satisfaction in helping others. Whenever I am needed I am there as a loyal confident friend, employee, student, or simply someone to lean on. I am enthusiastic, even when extra work has to be done to get the job finished correctly.

Throughout high school, I have been extremely hardworking. I am a first generation college student, and low income. I have had a job ever since the end of my sophomore year, in addition, to any informal summer jobs I have held before that. Even with handling work and other responsibilities school has always been a priority to me.

In this upcoming fall, I will attend UC Davis. While attending UCD, I hope to major in political science, so that later on I can attend law school; in addition, I will also major in Spanish, with a minor is communications to widen my horizons. I want to try hard to achieve my goal not only to make myself happy, but my family as well. My parents and grandparents have worked hard to get me where I am today.

Adelita Serena
Adelita Serena was born in Southern California and raised in Salinas California. Adelita was exposed to Chicano art and issues at a very young age.  Her father worked for the UFW for 10 years, which gave her experience fighting for human rights. Her mother was a very strong woman that taught her to be independent and respect family values. She learned to express herself through theatre arts starting in High School. Adelita is a founding member of Baktun 12 productions, a theatre company she performed with for 10 years. Baktun 12 productions gave her the oppurtunity to travel with a theater company, providing entertainment to influential political groups. Adelita has also worked with other Theatre companies such as Teatro Campesino. This experience led Adelita to work extensively with the Salinas community through the Women’s Crisis Center providing programs for at risk youth and abused women and children. Adelita’s passion is directing, and she continues to work on film projects and short documentaries. Adelita’s recent projects has given her the experience working and editing high definition and industry standard film equipment.
Aida Vance
I was raised in Gridley, CA to Mexican parents. After graduating as Valedictorian from Gridley High School, I decided to pursue a Civil Engineering degree at California State University, Chico. As a first generation college student, it really means a lot to me to be able to get a college education. Especially as a Latina, I hope that in the future I will be able to contribute to the diversity in the engineering workforce.
I am currently a junior and am on track to complete my degree within the next two years (four years total). I have been on the Dean’s Honor Roll all the semesters I have been in college and was MESA Freshman of the Year my first year. After graduating I plan to then continue my studies and get a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering. Throughout my college career at California State University, Chico, I have been highly involved in numerous student activities. I am currently the Vice President of Latinos in Technical Careers, which is the student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). I am an active member of the Concrete Canoe Team, the Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ACSE), and the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. I have also participated in a PG&E Student Leadership Conference, and have traveled to Washington D.C for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers National Conference.   I started a free basketball clinic for children at a labor camp in my home town of Gridley, CA, and volunteered as an assistant basketball for the varsity girls basketball team. This scholarship will be a very big help in ultimately getting a degree.
Brehanna Ramirez
I have just started taking classes at Sacramento State College, and am looking forward to continue in growing my thinking through a variety of subjects, that can add to my studies in art and literature.  I graduated from Sheldon High School, and stayed with an Artswork Program there, that gave me a variety of art’s studies; in music, in theater, in photography, and in drawing. All of which has only added to my life-long admiration for art. In the future I hope to study graphic design, and other art courses.  Mexican culture has been an influence on how I choose my color schemes, and also on the characterization of certain pieces. I hope to someday be able to show the importance of culture through art, and how influential some of the basics of our background can truly be. I also really want to take many trips down to different areas of Mexico, and study the culture myself, and in the future do what I can to help society there. This scholarship will help me to continue my studies at Sacramento State, and give me the ability to pay for the school supplies and transportation that I need.
